Did The Mirage and MGM Grand use to be 5 star resorts when they first opened? Now they are 4?

Mobil (rebranded Forbes) uses stars, and AAA uses diamonds. Neither the Mirage, nor the MGM Grand was ever a 5 star resort which is very difficult to get (44 hotels in entire country). The Skylofts at MGM Grand and "The Tower" section at Wynn have a 5 star rating, and are the only two places in Vegas.

Neither the Mirage nor the MGM Grand have a 5 diamond rating either. As far as I know they didn't have that rating in the past either. The 5 diamond rating is at Wynn and Encore, Venetian and Palazzo, the Four Seasons, and the Ritz Carlton before they closed. Also the Bellagio has a 5 diamond rating.

They were never 5-star resorts. The MGM might have some rooms that are 4-5star. But overall both hotels are in the 3.5star range. Their is nothing super special about either. When you are in the rooms, even the suites, it doesn't feel super luxurious like Wynn, Encore, The Hotel, Palazzo, etc.
