I haven't booked a hotel through vegas.com, but I have purchased show tickets through them before, and had no trouble at all.
That's a hard call. MGM is a great place, but some people find it overwhelmingly large. It has a fantastic pool area, which is something to consider since you're going in the summer.
The rooms at NYNY aren't really anything special (not bad though), but that is one of my favorite casino floors, and it has a lot of fun restaurants and bars. But the pool there really isn't anything special.
I think I'd probably choose MGM, since you can enjoy all the activities at NYNY without staying there. But you can't go to the MGM pool unless you are a guest there. And MGM is a notch above NYNY in terms of quality.
MGM, both have a good location on the strip, both are right across from each other but mgm owns like half the strip therefore you are more likely to get deals and things like that there. MGM is a much bigger company. They also own the new city center which has some of the best clubs on the strip for staying with mgm you may be able to get discounts or something, i'd look into that.New York New York VS. MGM grand in Las Vegas?
TI. And if booking DIRECTLY through them, do not hold back reserving a room. If the price goes down, you just need to call them to adjust to the lower rate. If it goes up, your lower rate will still stay the same. And you can cancel with no penalty as long as it is with a reasonable period of time before your stay (48 hours).

I think you should hold off on booking a room. It's a bit early for a summer time reservation. There could be a lot of fluctuation with rates between now and then.
And you need to read the fine print, Vegas.com might have a no cancellation clause.
MGM has the most comfortable beds on the strip, but I had a blast at Big Apple Bar in NYNY. I say stay at MGM and visit other casinos.
