They are like a divorced family. They can retain the name though they are not related anymore. Now MGM just means MGM. When they first built the MGM Grand it was themed after the movie studio with areas decorated to match some of the movie studios big hits. Favorites was the Wizard of Oz which had the balloon with Dorthy, Toto and the wizard along with the other three characters. When the studio was taken over they had to remove all the movie designs but were allowed to retain the MGM Lion out front. Even that was downsized from a giant lion head and his mouth was the entrace to the bronze statue that stands today. Different reason for the entrance change though.
Metro Goldwyn Meyer is correct. Kirk Kerkorian owned both the movie studio and the casino. Obviously he owned the movie studio first and named the hotel/casino after that.Defenition of MGM as in MGM grand?
