Opinions on MGM Grand?

My friends and I have booked our trip to Vegas and will be staying at MGM Grand. Can I get some opinions on the place? Is it a good, friendly vibe, or can the guests be a little rough? I just had an acquaintance tell me they get a lot of gang activity near the hotel/parking lot. Any experience with this?Opinions on MGM Grand?
The MGM Grand is a great place and you'll have a ball. In my line of work, I go to that hotel at least once a week; I ALWAYS park in their parking garage, and I've never had any problems there.

As far as what sort of "crowd" to expect... that completely depends on what sort of events are in town during your stay. When the NBA Allstar event was here, MGM Grand had a shooting in their parking lot. (Sounds like your acquaintance heard about that and exaggerated for effect... I assure you that's NOT a regular occurrence!) That same weekend also featured a shooting at a Strip Club, and a shooting outside a local liquor store. Our arrest rate during that weekend was almost twice what it was over New Year's, despite the fact that we actually had more visitors in town for New Year's. "Fight Weekends" (boxing) also tend to attract a rough and tumble sort of crowd. Apparently testosterone-laden sports fans plow themselves with so much alcohol that they tend to forget they're supposed to WATCH the fight, not start one of their own =).

So basically, don't change your plans... you'll be fine.

In case you don't already have it, here's the official hotel website so you can see what events, clubs, restaurants, etc are at your disposal:

I had a great stay there the room in the WEST TOWER was comfy and beautiful..the bartenders and staff were very polite and helpful... the only thing i didn't enjoy was the amount of children, but you can help that.. i stayed at many MGM-MIRAGE hotels and i was very pleased.Opinions on MGM Grand?
Just spent a couple of nights there and had a great time. The guests were very middle of road with a good mix of family tourists and young hipsters. They have an impressive array of restaurants running the gamut from fast food to ultra-gourmet. The rooms are pretty good and the location is also good with a bunch of other places within a "short" walk. The place often gets knocked due to its size but if you are staying there, the elevators are centrally located in the building so everything is pretty close to them.

I wouldnt be all that concerned about gang activity at any casino on the strip. There is more security than you can shake a stick at so any trouble that does happen is very quickly dealt with.
I stayed in one of the suites for a week back in 2000, and it was a great place. Security doesn't take any guff, so it is quiet and had a good vibe towards guests.

As for the gang activity, yes, there is some. There's some in all the streets surrounding the strip and downtown too. LVPD does a pretty good job at protecting the tourists, so they work hard to push the vermin back.

Only piece of advice I can offer is that jaywalkers have become a serious problem on the strip...so do not be one of the ones caught doing it, as you will get ticketed at $100. I saw LVPD make a mint earlier this year. Also, to hit a pedestrian jaywalking was knocked down to a misdemeanor, so that makes people walking targets.
I would stay there any time - great for the Monorail too.
i stayed there in february and i found that it was a great hotel. i would definitely go back. it is located at a good spot on the strip. the monorail also stops at the hotel. it has a lot of nice restaraunts and night clubs in it as well. i suggest visiting studio 54. the staff is very friendly as well. i never noticed gang activity but there are always security officers around. i mean, it is vegas and everyone is being watched like a hawk. hope you have a great time!
the hotel is nice. The area is ok as long as you don't wonder off the main part of the strip. There has been some gang activity and a security guard got beat up in the parking lot a few months ago, but they have increased the security and i think you will be ok. the rooms are nice and the casino is easy to walk around in
I like it the least of the primary strip hotels. Everything there seems far, the lighting seems darker and the people seem colder. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but it was just a bad vibe. Absolutely hated the poker room there - out in the middle of things, loud, uninviting, and obnoxious players not kept in check by the dealers.

So many better options at nearly the same price point. Can you re-book?
It's one of the best hotels in the strip. In the past years it has totally redone itself from inside. The West Wing tower is one of the most popular ones and it was remodel about 2 years ago. It open KA, a cirque du Solei show. I has about 4 bars and the newest ones are Rouge and the bar at the sports book. It has one of the best night clubs in the strip, Studio 54 and the best ultra lounge, Tabu, rated by the readers of the local newspaper. Its got a good size pool and a great spa. As far as gang activity, the attack on an EVS attendant (it wasn't a security guard) or Gardener was a random act and I can tell you all those guys are now serving prison time. Security takes their jobs very seriously. The biggest downside that people complaint about MGM is its size. It is the largest Hotel in the world with over 5000 rooms but other than that, its a great place. Enjoy
